Activities and Involvement
Our past activities include a trail of unparalleled floral events such as:
- “Floral Romances – Wedding of the Year” in 1998 featured an extravagant floral evening with a parade of avant-garde wedding floral designs by a congregation of renowned designers and wedding specialists.
- “Singapore Floral Heritage” in 1999 showcasing the transition of floral styles, trends and cultures from 1950s to the new Millennium at the Singapore Expo.
- “Floral Revelations” in 2002 - A joint collaboration with the AIFD members from Singapore in hosting the first ever AIFD International Design Forum outside of USA, beating stiff competition from London. Highlights of the four-day program include a 100-design Haute Couture Les Fleur Show and Singapore Flora-Cultural Evening showcasing the varied usage of flowers in ethnic Singapore.
- Invited by the ASEAN Confederation of Women’s Organizations to provide multi-racial theme floral decorations for their 10th General Assembly Gala Dinner in July 2002. Dr. Anamah Tan, ACWO Past President and Guest-of-Honour President S R Nathan commended on the floral artistry and the ingenious usage of materials that reflected the different cultures in Singapore. The floral table centrepieces provided a new insight to Singapore’s floral scene to delegates who came from the ASEAN countries.
- Invited by National Parks Board to participate in the GardenTech Exhibition at Peirce Road Depot in October 2002. Two of our Members presented a floral demonstration entitled “In Symbiosis With Nature” to show how materials from our natural environment could be used to beautify floral arrangements and add flora and greenery in homes.
- Invited by the Ikebana International, Singapore Chapter 135 to stage the first ever floral demonstration cum drama on the classic Christmas story of “The Nutcracker Suite” in December 2002.
- Invited by the Taoist Mission (Singapore) to put up floral decoration for the 9th Singapore Taoist Day Celebration Dinner in March 2004. Guests-of-Honour were President S R Nathan and Mrs. S R Nathan. In addition, FDSS members had also put up “oriental theme” floral demonstrations as part of the organiser’s staging of living in harmony with Chinese festivals and celebrations.
- Participated in the National Parks Board “Clean & Green Week Carnival” held at the Bedok Reservoir Park on 12 November 2005. Two of our members put up a floral demonstration featuring table landscapes using floral materials.
- Committee Member Peter Chin presented a floral demonstration at GardenTech 2007 organized by National Parks Board at the newly launched HortPark.
On National level, we also play an active role whereby representatives of the society sit on the Subcommittee of WDA’s Workforce Skills Qualification (Floral Industry).
